Custom Made vs Ready-to-Wear:
What's the Real Difference?

Walk into any clothing store and you will find jackets, trousers, shirts — all labeled with a size. Medium. Large. 52. These numbers suggest that your body fits into one of a handful of categories. The reality, of course, is that no two bodies are the same.

Ready-to-wear garments are engineered for a statistical average. The shoulders fit most people adequately. The chest has room for most chests. The sleeves hang at a length that is acceptable for most arms. The result is a garment that fits no one particularly well.

What Custom Made Actually Means

Custom made — true custom made — starts with you. Not with a pattern. Not with a block. With your measurements, your posture, and your way of standing in the world. Every seam is placed to work with your specific proportions. Every width, every length, every curve is derived from your body.

This is not about luxury for its own sake. It is about function. A jacket with shoulders that sit exactly on your shoulder bones moves with you differently than one that sits a centimetre too wide or too narrow. You stop adjusting. You stop being aware of what you are wearing. The garment disappears — and you remain.

The Three Things Sizing Cannot Fix

Shoulder width. This is the most critical measurement in a jacket. If the shoulder seam does not sit at the edge of your shoulder bone, no alteration can fix it. Letting out or taking in a chest is possible. Rebuilding a shoulder is not.

Torso length. Men have different ratios of torso to leg. A jacket hemmed for a 178cm man may sit too high or too low on a man of exactly the same height with a longer torso. The standard proportions assume a standard proportion that most bodies do not have.

Posture. A man who carries his shoulders slightly forward, or who has one shoulder lower than the other — which describes most people — will find that any ready-made jacket creates a pull or a twist somewhere. A custom pattern accounts for this from the beginning.

Construction: What Happens Inside

Beyond fit, there is the question of how a garment is made. A ready-to-wear jacket at almost any price point uses a fused construction: an adhesive interlining is bonded to the outer fabric under heat and pressure. It is fast, consistent, and inexpensive. It is also what makes most jackets feel slightly stiff and why they can bubble or delaminate over time.

A custom made jacket uses a canvas — a layer of natural fibre that is stitched, not glued, to the shell. Over time, this canvas moulds to the wearer's chest. The jacket does not just fit the body at the moment of purchase; it fits better every year. The garment becomes yours in a way a fused jacket never can.

This is why the men who wear custom made rarely go back. It is not sentiment. It is that, having worn a garment built around them, wearing anything else begins to feel like a compromise.
